Call me sentimental, but tonight I am reminiscing about my youth in Ashtabula, pondering the edifices and landmarks which characterize the antique beauty of the town. Though I was raised a Catholic, I have traced my family roots to possible Jewish ancestors while visiting Israel 23 years ago. I remember many of my neighbors and acquaintances being very friendly, approachable, honest, and intelligent. I never knew some of the neighbors were also Jewish and they had different customs and holidays from the Christian acquaintances. I loved Ashtabula for its rainbow of representative cultures. For its size, I always thought of the city as having everything one could need, a mini-metropolis between the big cities of Erie and Cleveland. Now when I return home for brief visits, I miss the ethnic and cultural diversity I enjoyed as young man. I have also become saddened that many churches and a synagogue are not in use with some requiring expensive repairs. The Tifereth Israel Congregation Synagogue along W Prospect Rd. is an example of a beautiful tradition unused. At least I have never seen anyone there for several years. Ashtabula doesn't seem like a friendly and prosperous town today; I hope there are enough involved citizens to help Bula get back on its feet.
